I am proud to announce that Natural Source has been approved for membership to the Personal Care Products Council, the Washington, D.C. based National Trade Association representing the global cosmetic and personal care products industry. Member companies are an elite group described as “the most trusted and cherished brands in beauty and personal care” and pledge to do their part to make the world better, whether in conducting business to reflect environmental responsibility or supporting numerous charitable causes.
The Personal Care Products Council, originally known as the Manufacturing Perfumers’ Association at the end of the 19th century, really became stronger when, as a result of World War, nearly five million American soldiers, most of whom were in Europe for the first time, became exposed to French perfume and other fine toilet articles. By the 1920’s, the Association was influential in convincing the Legislature, to clarify the Prohibition Law language to exempt products “unfit for use of beverage purposes”, and thus saving the perfume industry. Since then it has been committed to continuously promote product safety, quality and innovation.
Presently, luxury skin care products use packaging in order to communicate their core value. That’s why I chose glass for packaging French Secret®, Natural’s Source line of skin care. Indeed creamy products may be impacted adversely by unacceptable interaction with cheap plastic packaging.
Plastic packaging can release harmful compounds that will be easily absorbed by the fatty ingredients of the products it’s used to package.
The effects of plastic contamination include:
▪ Direct toxicity, as in the cases of lead, cadmium, and mercury
▪ Carcinogens, as in the case of diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)
▪ Endocrine disruption, which can lead to cancers, birth defects, immune system suppression and develop mental problems in children.
In addition, what is the point of buying non-toxic skin and body care products if you’re left with a pile of non-recyclable plastic containers that will sit for centuries and seep toxins into a landfill? I already wrote some time ago on the huge islands of plastic polluting the oceans. The situation is asking us to act responsibly every day.
On the other hand Glass is impermeable and nonporous, it doesn’t degrade, and it’s chemically inert, meaning that it will not seep into the substances it contains. Glass is also the ultimate sustainable product. It can be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality, making it friendlier to our fragile environment. Be earth friendly and health conscious. Choose glass!
